Two full-length novels? For absolutely nothing? Free books? I must be mad! Completely off my nut.
Regardless…download them (see below), read them and enjoy them.
Both novels are set in the fictional city of Ilium, a Great Lake metropolis that’s a cross between Detroit, Buffalo and H.P. Lovecraft’s haunted Arkham. Strange things afoot, dark forces at work.
So Dark the Night is a supernatural mystery, an homage to film noir, cult TV and pulp fiction. Imagine a weird hybrid of Raymond Chandler, the films of Val Lewton and “The X Files”.
Cassandra Zinnea and Evgeny Nightstalk are operatives employed by After Hours Investigations, a detective agency open from dusk ’til dawn. Their odd hours attract a mixed and eccentric clientele and, inevitably, they find themselves involved in cases that have paranormal and occult overtones. Zinnea’s the brains and Nightstalk supplies the brawn and as a team they’re practically unbeatable. Their relationship is fractious, bittersweet, and together they make up the most attractive and likable tandem since Holmes and Watson trod the mean streets of Victorian London.
But this time they might be in over their heads as an evil group of occultists plot to bring about the end of the world. Cover art by Ado Ceric:

Of the Night is a shorter effort, a thriller set in the same universe as So Dark the Night, but taking place two years later, with a different cast of characters.
A series of events lead to a breach in the continuum, allowing fearsome creatures to break through and terrorize the citizens of Ilium. Police detective Gus Novak soon realizes that the mutilated bodies popping up all over the city are not the handiwork of your garden variety psychopath and he enlists the aid of fellow denizens of the night in order to thwart a cruel and inhuman foe.

So Dark the Night took three years to write and edit and I firmly believe it is the finest work I’ve accomplished in my career thus far.
Of the Night is a shorter, companion volume. If So Dark the Night is a big budget, “A” picture, Of the Night is a “B” flick, a tight, tense thriller, smaller in stature and scope but a treat in its own right.
Both are fast, smart, stylish reads, filled with pop culture references, in-jokes and scares galore.
Have fun with them.

Or else…

Looking forward to it.
Yummy. Thanks for posting it. I just read the first four pages and love the voice. I’m sorry it isn’t in print, but I’ll do my best to send my readers your way.

i shall check this out in a few days i will be happy to give you some type of review for it. I will pass it around as much as i can to spread the word. I also throw a link up on my page. It is above a bunch of other free stuff so people should see it.
Have just finished, and quite enjoyed this book. I will go into more detail on the SF Fans thread on LibraryThing. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who has not read it yet. Thanks for directing me to your website, Cliff, and I will have to look out for some more of your works.
Although I love to read, I have never done a review of a book before, but I feel I need to tell the world what a wonderful book this is, so here goes…
So Dark The Night… a campy, scary, funny piece of noir that I couldn’t wait to get back to after setting it down. The main characters are totally lovable (flaws and all) who you can’t help but root for.
Also, as in past writings of Cliff’s, the supporting cast is great… from a man-eating pet plant to the poor clerk at the love shop… weird and wonderful. And the bad guys are BAD! You do not want to mess with these guys, they have some special weapons at their disposal.
Very interesting story line… hard to describe without spoiling the book but it keeps you guessing all the way and takes some interesting and unusual twists and turns. And while the story takes place it is infused with sometimes hilarious, sometimes fantastical bits that left me shaking my head and laughing out loud… something most books can’t accomplish. I couldn’t have predicted the events contained in the climax in a million years and was absolutely on the edge of my seat.
Great reading Cliff… thank you and keep them coming.
Everybody should read this book!
Laird
Looking forward to reading!
Cheers,
James Curtis Smith

Hey, thanks for the free downloads! I’m looking forward to reading your novels.
You consider re-releasing this in 6″ x 9″, which is friendlier to new electronic books like the Sony PRS-505.
Cliff,
Thanks for the comment on my blog re: “Hatchet”. I’m looking forward to reading the novels that I’ve downloaded from here and you can rest assured that I will be talking about them. Thanks for being real to the genre…gives me hope for what’s to come.

Would you mind if I featured your book as the “free ebook of the week” on our site, and linked back to this post?
It will help gains some exposure for your writing, but I wanted your permission first.

Cliff,
I followed you from the blog at Authonomy. You are refreshing. I am personally very tired of letting the masses rule everything. It is difficult being intelligent. Just mentioning it leaves one open to charges of elitism and arrogance. Acting on it is very much beyond the pale. So Luther (my husband) and I have carved out our own existence, with the ever present wish that somehow there could be space for us in book stores and public dialogue.
I have started reading your book. Evgeny Davidovitch is very amusing. I look forward to reading the rest of it.

I am still crying. And not because of your case file references which are vile. Every time you hit bottom, you went further. I do like your innovative approach to the never ending problem of naming streets etc. though. Unfortunately, I think a truly appreciative audience is somewhat limited in size.
I will read the next one after I recover. Just as an aside, I am going to put it on my book shelf on Authonomy although I realize you probably don’t care. It’s not like either of us has anything to gain (or lose) there.
Au nouveau, mon ami.
Nancy

Cliff, on behalf of all those who’ve been waiting for unrestricted digital books for decades, thanks so much for putting these online. I’m going to do the same thing with my three novels, if I ever get them finished
Nice stories.
Maybe the frequency of f* – words is a worthy challenge
The language is tough at times, I agree, and certainly not for all tastes. Excessive? A debate for another time. Thanks for dropping by.
